Every Child a Theologian:
Catechesis for a New Generation
by Georgie Normand, M.A.
If we are doing catechesis the way it should be done, every Catholic child should enter adulthood as a lay theologian, acknowledging the fact of the Fall and its consequences, understanding the need for the Incarnation to heal fallen human nature, and thoroughly understand their lifelong dependence on the Church and the Sacraments as the only remedy.
But decades of anemic catechesis have created an exodus so great that even recent increases in baptisms as well as vocations cannot compensate for the numbers who have left and are still leaving. The truth is that they were never catechized. One study found that the decision to eventually leave the Church was made by many of them as early as their late tween and early teen years. This means we have not only been failing but failing in the formative early years. Learn the surprising story behind this crisis and how we can fix it.
