Georgie Normand, M.A.
GEORGIE NORMAND, M.A. is an educator, longtime catechist, founder of Red Sea Catechetics, and author of the It’s a Journey Sacramental Preparation Program for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. She spent more than a decade as a second-grade sacramental preparation catechist at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Jacksonville, Florida (Diocese of St. Augustine). She fondly recalls the religious instruction she herself received from fervent Dominican nuns during the time she attended the parish school at St. Matthew’s in the 1950’s and 60 ‘s. She and her husband, Skip, have been married for more than fifty years and continue to live in Jacksonville, while their family is scattered around the country.
Author of the upcoming book Every Child a Theologian, Georgie believes that the study of theology is important for all ages and that it can and should be digested by the youngest children with the help of visual teaching aids – in other words – “teaching up.” Her goal is to deepen today’s catechesis of the young to help them better understand the Faith and to preempt the false idea that the Church is man’s idea. The necessity of the Church is often questioned because of a lack of understanding of its mission, especially that of the sacramental treasure it offers to heal us from the effects of the Fall. In fact, when catechesis is presented without the necessary context of the Fall and its consequences, the Church no longer seems relevant. Finally, her hope is that a more intensive catechesis will equip young people with the spiritual formation needed to recognize and resist the unbelief and errors rampant in our culture and in other belief systems around the world. By building a stronger foundation, she hopes to prevent the falling away that has become so common in recent years.
Georgie is also known for her work in the field of literacy/dyslexia. She has authored dyslexia screeners, interventions, and professional development programs. Her many articles on dyslexia have appeared in Exceptional Parent Magazine.
